Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins near the surface of the skin. They are most common in the legs and ankles. Varicose veins usually aren’t serious. In rare cases, they may be a sign of a more serious problem that may need treatment, such as deep vein thrombosis.
Spider Veins
Spider veins (telangiectasia) are small blood vessels that show through the skin. They can look like fine red, blue, or purple lines that branch out like a web on the legs, face or indeed any other part of the body.

Venous Ulcers
Venous leg ulcer is a chronic (long-lasting) ulcer (damage or break of the skin) of the lower part of the leg, usually the inside part, just above the ankle. By far, the majority of leg ulcers are venous in nature. The skin around the ulcer may be discoloured and hardened. When infected it may also produce a foul-smelling discharge
Deep Venous Thrombosis
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot (thrombus) in a deep vein, usually in the legs but can also develop in other areas such as the arm or pelvic veins. These clots are dangerous and require medical attention right away because they can break loose, travel through the bloodstream to the lungs, and block blood flow in the lungs causing life threatening pulmonary embolism (PE) which is often life-threatening. DVT can also lead to long-lasting problems of the vein leading to ongoing leg ache, swelling and colour change.
Superficial Thrombophlebitis
Superficial thrombophlebitis is inflammation of a superficial vein just under the skin, usually in the leg but can develop in other areas such as the arm. A small blood clot also commonly forms in the vein, but is usually not serious. The condition usually settles and goes within 2-6 weeks. Treatments can ease pain or discomfort. Superficial thrombophlebitis is different to, and much less serious than, deep vein thrombosis (DVT). However, in a small number of cases, complications can occur with superficial thrombophlebitis, including extension of the blood clot further up the vein. If the clot extends to where the superficial and deep, larger veins join, a DVT can develop. Many cases of superficial thrombophlebitis occur for no apparent reason.
Facial Spider Veins
Broken blood vessels on the face are enlarged blood vessels that occur just beneath the surface of the skin. The resulting red, web-shaped appearance gives them their common name; spider veins. Spider veins are commonly found on the face or legs, though they may appear anywhere on the body. Other than their appearance, spider veins do not cause any other symptoms.
Pelvic Venous Congestion Syndrome
Pelvic venous congestion syndrome is also known as ovarian vein reflux. It is a cause of chronic pelvic pain in approximately 13-40% of women. It is often caused by dilatation of the ovarian and/or pelvic veins, rather like varicose veins but in the pelvis. The pressure resulting from the varicosity of pelvic veins results in the pain of pelvic congestion syndrome and may also cause visible varicose veins around the vulva, vagina, inner thighs, sometimes the buttocks and down the legs.

Will Medicare cover my treatment?
Medicare can rebate part of the cost when treatment is clinically necessary — for example, symptomatic varicose veins confirmed on ultrasound. Purely cosmetic spider vein treatment isn’t rebatable. We’ll tell you exactly where you stand after assessment.
Do I need a GP referral?
Not to book a first consultation — but a referral is required if you want to claim any available Medicare rebate, so it’s worth arranging one beforehand.
How much downtime should I expect?
Most in-office procedures — EVLA and sclerotherapy included — allow you to walk out and return to normal activity the same day, with compression stockings worn for a short recovery period.
Is Bondi Vein Clinic easy to get to from the city?
Yes — the clinic is inside Westfield Tower 2 at Bondi Junction, directly above Bondi Junction station, so it’s a straightforward train or bus trip from the CBD or Eastern Suburbs.
